The Power of Touch
Skin - to - skin contact is beneficial to our health, it's not just for babies or the sick. We all need to be touched ina a caring way.
It's not just doctors and nurses that need to extend human touch. We all need the connection, to not only give, but also to receive.
Human touch has decreased for a few reasons:
fear of sexual innuendo
Some ill effects of lack of touch arae not always obvious and don't receive much attention. In our society unwelcome touch can mean or be interpreted as dominance, sexual harassment, or exploitation.
Touch deprivation may lead to mental illness, violence, and comprised immune system. Lack of physical touch can be worse than physical abuse.
Massage can reducesymptoms of anxiety, depression, pain, and stress. Aslo, it can be helpful for illnesses such as anorexia nervosa, arthritis, cancer, fibromyalgia, and stroke.
Massage may also help to reduce symptoms associated with alcohol withdrawal and smoking cessation. Massage also helps to strengthen ones self-esteem, boost your immune system, increase flexibility and improve sleep.
